Why you should eat fruits & vegetables that are in season

Eat a variety of different colored vegetables to brighten your plate.Some of you may wonder why it is so important to know what fruits and vegetables are in season.  The reason for this is eating fruits and vegetables that are in season allows us to eat them at their peak.  Which means their nutrient value, freshness and quality is at its ultimate level.  I don’t know about you, but that sounds like the kind of produce I want to eat.

During autumn, we need to know what fruits and vegetables are in season, so we can take advantage of these foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.   Vegetables that are in season are pumpkins, beets, sweet potatoes, kale, okra, spaghetti squash, and parsnips.  Pumpkins and sweet potatoes are high in fiber and vitamin A.  Kale and okra are rich in vitamin K and C.  They are great in a salad, sautéed, or even in soup.  Two fruits that are in season during the fall are cranberries and pears.   One medium sized pear is packed with 6 grams of fiber!  Also, pears are unique, because they ripen after they are picked at room temperature.  Furthermore, cranberries are not only used for cranberry sauce during Thanksgiving.  There are many other ways you can eat cranberries.  Cranberries can be eaten dried or fresh.  They go well with meat and poultry or even in a salad.  They are rich in phytochemicals, which can protect our heart from oxidative damage and help support healthy blood pressure levels.

The next time you go to the supermarket or search for a new meal to prepare, keep in mind what produce is in season, so you get the most nutrients and freshest taste out of your meal.
